Norman Mubape got employed by Thomas Mapfumo
soon after finishing his Ordinary Level. He was a musician/band
member and played his music for fifteen years in order to earn a
living.
Norman would sleep with six to eight women after every
show without condoms, paying every one of them and sometimes would
not sleep at his home with his wife. If confronted by his wife he
would beat her up until she became unconscious.
In 1996 he became ill and his relatives thought
that he was being bewitched by his wife but instead he was diagnosed
HIV positive and was admitted to Mashambazhou (Home
of Hope) where he was left to die since those days there was
no cure for the disease.
Norman’s wife deserted him because of his continued
illness and he received harassment from his relatives because he
had contracted HIV/AIDS. Now he is living positively and has remarried
to an HIV positive woman. Norman is very grateful to Padare Men’s
Forum on Gender who gave him counseling.
